How often does my Portfolio Rebalance?

Understanding how Double's optimization engine works and what it means for how often your portfolio will rebalance

Updated this week

Here at Double we get asked the question "How often do you rebalance my portfolio" all the time.

Unfortunately it's not a straightforward answer but the simple version is: we think about rebalancing every day, but only execute a rebalance it if it's going to make your portfolio meaningfully better. We call this approach of Opportunistic Rebalancing, which you can read more about in a paper published here, has been shown in backtests to help improve returns.

The basic tenant is that you should look at your portfolio everyday and analyze it for trading opportunities. There might be trading opportunities due to a rebalance being required, an increase or decrease of cash, or tax loss harvest opportunities. If the trading opportunities "make the portfolio better" above some threshold then we execute the trades. Otherwise we do nothing.

At the core of this our our Portfolio Optimizer, which you can read more about here.

You can control a lot of the settings we put into our optimizer on your Settings page, which can be found here.
